“Starry” by Esther Li: Let the Beauty of the Jewels Speak for Itself

May 28, 2011 in Antique/Vintage, Brands, Designers, Esther Li, Fashion, Jewellery, Slideshow, Starry

By the time I finished photo-shooting at Starry, I knew right away that I didn’t need to write a long attractive text for this unique handmade jewellery boutique. I decided to let the jewellery pieces sold at Starry speak for themselves as their beauty is simply beyond words to describe. When I popped into Starry by chance four days before photo-shooting, I was entirely dazzled by the display showcase filled with a lot of really stunning bits that I couldn’t take my eyes off it. Esther Li is an amazing local Chinese handmade jewellery designer for whom designing is an opportunity to satisfy her passion. She doesn’t mass produce products; each design is individually handcrafted in a very small quantity and is therefore totally unique, so in other words each piece is made a true rare masterpiece, which surely makes the wearer feel privileged. Esther aims to come up with original designs which can strike a balance between the designer’s distinctive signature style and the needs of the market, and I would say she made it.

1st Hong Kong Young Knitwear Designers’ Contest for Hong Kong Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2011 – China Fantasy by Patrick Ho

February 1, 2011 in Autumn/Winter, Designers, Fashion, Fashion Week, Hong Kong, Knitwear, Patrick Ho, Seasons, Slideshow

1st Hong Kong Young Knitwear Designers’ Contest for Hong Kong Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2011 presented the award winning collection entitled “China Fantasy” by Patrick Ho (the second runner-up and Woolmark prize winner). The contest provided the young designers with a precious chance to make their dream become a reality by creating something new and brilliant. Among the other contestants’ designs, Patrick Ho’s “China Fantasy” especially appealed to me and probably westerners in general due to its exotic and oriental feel.

As the name suggests, elements of traditional Chinese costume were found in the collection. Red was a key color accented with floral prints and with gold thread twisted into the fabric, which symbolizes happiness, luckiness, and opulence in Chinese tradition. The qipao inspired knitted evening dress inherited the art of traditional qipao to feature a perfect female body. What was more, the Chinese Manchu Qing Dynasty princess shoes and headpiece and the emerald pearl necklace with which the models were adorned enhanced the total look of the collection. Chinese New Year is around the corner, do you fancy partying up in the chic Chinese look?

My Favorite Designer 4: the Taiwanese Designer Wang-Chen Tsai-Hsia for Shiatzy Chen – “Neo-Chinese Chic” at Paris Fashion Week Fall/Winter 2010

March 12, 2010 in Autumn/Winter, Brands, Designers, Fashion, Fashion Week, Oriental, Paris, Seasons, Shiatzy Chen, Slideshow, Spring/Summer, Wang-Chen Tsai-Hsia

I got that attached feeling to the Taiwanese designer Wang-Chen Tsai-Hsia for Shiatzy Chen probably because I myself am half Taiwanese (my mom’s Taiwanese) and born in the States. Wang-Chen started her fashion career in the 1970s as a seamstress in a clothing store in Taiwan, and has become the founder/design director of Shiatzy Chen and the only Chinese member of the French Fashion Federation 30 years later. Her designs have always been beautiful full of oriental elegance since the debut of Shiatzy Chen at Paris Fashion Week in 2008. Wang-Chen blends Eastern and Western fashion senses into her clothes. They’re crafted in Western cuts, in top-quality brocade and silk with exquisite, hand-stitching craftsmanship like embroidery, appliques and beading. The brand spirit for Shiatzy Chen’s “neo-Chinese chic,” which transfers traditional Chinese aesthetics into modern fashion design, and therefore its collections always result in a beautiful amalgamation of oriental aesthetics and western splendor. Each season Shiatzy Chen picks one of the Chinese elements as an inspiration for the new collection such as traditional Chinese calligraphy and classical ink and wash painting for 2010 Spring/Summer collection, Chinese porcelain works for 2009 Spring/Summer collection, and the Silk Road for Fall/Winter 2009 Collection. Wang-Chen’s inspiration this season’s the essence of jade. The show took place at the Grand Palais on the 8th day of Paris Fashion Week (9th March).
